Sea of Thieves Is Getting a Live-Action Movie: Here's What We Know

Microsoft has just confirmed that Sea of Thieves, the massively popular pirate adventure game by Rare, is officially getting a live-action movie. The announcement is part of a huge wave of Xbox game adaptations, and fans of the game are already buzzing with excitement.

What Is Sea of Thieves?

Sea of Thieves is an online multiplayer pirate adventure game developed by Rare and published by Microsoft. It was first released in March 2018 for Xbox One and Windows 10 PC. In the game, players sail the open seas, hunt for treasure, battle other pirates, and complete quests together. Over the years, it has grown into one of Xbox's most beloved games and even expanded to PlayStation 5.

The Big Announcement: A Sea of Thieves Movie Is Coming

Xbox's head of content, Matt Booty, confirmed the movie to Entertainment Weekly, making it official. The film will be a live-action adaptation of the game, bringing the world of pirates, sea battles, and treasure hunting to the big screen.

The announcement is part of a massive Xbox content push that includes over a dozen film and TV adaptations in development. Microsoft is serious about turning its biggest gaming franchises into major entertainment properties.

Who Is Producing the Sea of Thieves Movie?

The film will be produced by Destin Daniel Cretton through his production company, Hisako Films. Cretton is best known for directing Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and is currently directing Spider-Man: Brand New Day for Marvel.

Importantly, Cretton will serve as producer, not director; a director for the Sea of Thieves movie has not yet been attached. A writer also hasn't been confirmed yet, meaning the project is still in its early stages.

What Other Xbox Game Movies Are in Development?

Sea of Thieves is just one piece of a much bigger picture. Here's a look at what else Xbox has in the works:

• Gears of War movie: Directed by David Leitch (Deadpool 2, The Fall Guy), written by Jon Spaihts (Dune: Part Two), coming to Netflix; tells the origin story of Delta Squad

• Gears of War animated series: Also heading to Netflix

• Call of Duty movie: Directed by Peter Berg and Taylor Sheridan, set for a 2028 release

• A Minecraft Movie Squared: The sequel to A Minecraft Movie, arriving in 2027

Why Does a Sea of Thieves Movie Make Sense?

Sea of Thieves has always had strong cinematic qualities; it features a rich pirate world, epic sea battles, humor, teamwork, and adventure.

The game's colorful art style and open-world storytelling make it a natural fit for a big-screen adventure. With the success of A Minecraft Movie already proving that Xbox game adaptations can work with audiences, Microsoft is doubling down on this strategy.

Does Sea of Thieves Have a Movie Release Date?

As of June 2026, no release date has been confirmed for the Sea of Thieves movie. The project is still in early development, with no director or writer yet attached. Fans will need to wait for further updates from Microsoft and Hisako Films.
