9 Kings is a roguelike kingdom builder and deck-driven strategy game developed by Sad Socket and published by Hooded Horse. It entered Early Access on Steam on May 23, 2025, for Windows and macOS.
Each run represents decades of rule. You start with a capital and a deck tied to your chosen king, then place buildings, troops and spells on a small grid. At the end of every year a rival king attacks, and the battle plays out automatically based on how you arranged and upgraded your kingdom.
Positioning matters, because many cards buff or empower neighboring tiles. Defeating an attacking king lets you loot cards from that king's own deck, so builds mix knights, wizards, undead, mercenaries and nature magic in unexpected ways. Perks and random events push each run in a new direction.
Alongside the single-player mode, an async multiplayer mode pits your kingdom against eight rival players to see whose realm lasts longest. Ranked progress rewards consistent, well-planned builds.
Runs are short and easy to restart, which suits fans of deckbuilders, auto-battlers and city builders who enjoy finding overpowered combos.
Each king has a distinct starting deck, so the choice of ruler shapes the early game. Some lean on sturdy troops, others on spells, gold or swarms of summoned units. Knowing which rival will attack next, and which cards that king could hand you, is part of the long-term plan. Short sessions and quick restarts make it easy to test a new combo.
