Adobe Substance 3D Painter is a professional 3D texturing application developed and published by Adobe. Its Steam listing, currently the Substance 3D Painter 2026 edition, runs on Windows PC and macOS and is used by game studios, indie developers, and animation and visual effects teams.
You import a 3D model and paint directly on its surface in real time. Layers, masks, and brushes work much like a 2D image editor, but every stroke can carry color, roughness, metal, and height information at once, so the result looks like a finished material rather than flat paint.
Smart materials wrap onto a model automatically and react to its shape, adding edge wear, dirt, or rust where they would naturally appear. A particle system can throw weathering effects across a surface, and the app can paint across many texture sets or UDIM tiles on complex assets.
When the texturing is done, Painter exports maps in the right format for engines and renderers such as Unreal Engine, Unity, Godot, V-Ray, Redshift, and RenderMan, so the result in the engine stays close to the viewport.
Substance 3D Painter suits 3D artists and game developers at any skill level who want fast, realistic texturing. It works well alongside Substance 3D Designer, which builds the reusable materials that Painter applies.
Activation: Keys activate on Steam, and the app runs through the Steam client on Windows and Mac.
Perpetual vs. subscription: Adobe states that the Steam standalone perpetual version gets free feature updates until March 2027 and stays yours afterward. Access through the Substance 3D Indie subscription instead tracks the latest release while active.
Not included: Unmetered Substance 3D Assets access and generative AI features are only available through Adobe, not the Steam version.
Before you buy, check the activation platform and region on each offer, then follow our guide on how to activate your CD key. For more details, see the official Adobe Substance 3D Painter page.
