Age of Empires: Definitive Edition is a real-time strategy game published by Xbox Game Studios and developed by Forgotten Empires with Tantalus Media. It is a full remaster of the original 1997 Age of Empires and its Rise of Rome expansion. The game launched for Windows 10 on February 20, 2018 and arrived on Steam in August 2019. It is a PC-only release.
You guide an ancient civilization from the Stone Age to the Iron Age. Villagers gather food, wood, stone, and gold, you build houses, farms, and military buildings, and you research technologies to advance through each age while training armies to defend your land or conquer rivals.
The remaster rebuilds the graphics for resolutions up to 4K, adds a remastered soundtrack, and brings modern quality-of-life features such as improved pathfinding, unit queuing, and a zoomable view. Campaigns are now fully narrated and cover Egypt, Greece, Babylon, Yamato Japan, and Rome.
Single-player includes the story campaigns and skirmishes against AI. Multiplayer supports up to eight players online, with cross-play between the Steam and Microsoft Store versions, and a scenario editor lets you build your own maps and missions.
Age of Empires: Definitive Edition suits strategy fans who want to revisit where the series began, history lovers, and newcomers who prefer a slower, base-building RTS before moving on to the later games.
Steam: Steam keys activate in the Steam client and are the most common PC version on offer.
Microsoft Store: Microsoft Store keys redeem on a Microsoft account and install through the Xbox app on Windows. Both versions can play online together.
Not on consoles: Unlike Age of Empires II and IV, this game has no Xbox or PlayStation version.
Before you buy, check the activation platform and region on each offer, then follow our guide on how to activate your CD key. If you want the medieval sequel, see Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition, or visit the official Age of Empires website.
