The Three Kingdoms is a real-time strategy expansion for Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition, developed by Forgotten Empires with World's Edge and published by Xbox Game Studios. It was released on May 6, 2025, the same day the base game launched on PlayStation 5, and it is available on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
The core loop stays classic Age of Empires II: gather resources, build an economy, advance through the ages, and lead armies against rival players or the AI. The expansion changes what you can build by adding five new civilizations: Shu, Wei, Wu, Jurchens, and Khitans.
Each civilization brings its own unique units. Wei fields Tiger Cavalry that grow stronger as they defeat enemies, Wu uses Fire Archers and Jian Swordsmen, and the Khitans gather food from Pastures instead of farms. New unit lines such as Traction Trebuchets, Fire Lancers, Rocket Carts, and Dragon Ships also arrive.
Three new story campaigns follow Liu Bei of Shu, Cao Cao of Wei, and the Sun Clan of Wu during the Three Kingdoms era. Heroes with special abilities play a big role, and the update also adds two new AI difficulty levels, Easiest and Legendary. The new civilizations work in single-player, co-op, and online multiplayer modes.
The Three Kingdoms suits existing Age of Empires II players who want fresh civilizations to master, and fans of Chinese history who enjoy story-driven campaigns.
