Airplane Mode is a single-player simulation game developed by Bacronym with Hosni Auji and published by AMC Games. It was released on October 15, 2020 for Windows PC and macOS, and the NYU Game Center Incubator is credited alongside the studio. The idea is simple and intentionally low-key: recreate the experience of a long-haul airline trip as faithfully as possible.
Instead of flying the plane, you are a passenger in a coach window seat, and the flight plays out in real time. Taxi, takeoff, cruising, and landing all happen at their actual pace, so a session lasts hours, not minutes. You can look out the window at satellite imagery of the route, adjust the overhead reading light, and simply watch time pass.
How you pass the time is the game. You can watch old movies from the 1930s and track the flight on the seatback screen, read the in-flight magazine with its crosswords and Sudoku, dig through your carry-on bag, or use your phone. Meal and drink service arrives on schedule, and a safety video plays before departure.
No two flights are exactly alike, which gives the game a little replay value. Random events such as turbulence, delays, and patchy Wi-Fi can change the trip, and the cabin is filled with authentic ambient sounds, from engine hum to other passengers.
Airplane Mode suits players who enjoy slow, relaxing, or deliberately mundane experiences, along with anyone who likes offbeat simulation humor. It is a single-player game with no combat, scores, or time pressure.
