The story is set in a near future where Earth will soon be uninhabitable. The European Space Agency sends the Hope-01 mission, crewed by astronauts Ariane and Thomas, to survey Persephone, a newly found ninth planet at the edge of the solar system. A crash landing separates the pair, and you guide Ariane across the frozen surface to reach her injured partner.

Moment to moment, the game blends traversal, exploration, and stealth. Ariane climbs ice walls, swings across chasms with a grappling hook, and manages her oxygen supply while avoiding threats she cannot simply fight. Her Pathfinder tool helps her read the terrain and find a route through shifting landscapes.

Aphelion is a single-player, story-driven experience with no multiplayer. Clues found along the way reveal more about Persephone and a strange phenomenon that seems to bend reality around the crew. Pacing is deliberate, with quiet stretches of exploration broken up by tense chase and hiding sequences where a mistake can cost Ariane her life. The planet's weather and terrain also change as you progress, so familiar routes can become new obstacles.
