Balan Wonderworld is a 3D action platformer published by Square Enix and co-developed with ARZEST. It was released on March 26, 2021 for PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch, and was directed by Sonic the Hedgehog co-creator Yuji Naka.
You play as Leo or Emma, two young people led into Wonderworld by the mysterious maestro Balan. The world is built from people's memories and worries, and each of its twelve chapters tells the story of a troubled person whose heart has lost its balance.
The main hook is the costume system. More than 80 costumes each grant one ability, such as floating, freezing time, or attacking enemies, and many stages hide collectibles that only a specific costume can reach. Finding the right costume and coming back later to explore more is a big part of the loop.
Between stages you return to a hub island where small creatures called Tims live, and you can feed them with drops collected during levels. Boss encounters and short Balan Bouts minigames break up the platforming.
The game supports local co-op for two players on one screen, which requires two controllers. It suits younger players, families, and fans of colorful, collectible-focused platformers who prefer a gentle challenge over precise, punishing jumps.
