Baldur's Gate II: Throne of Bhaal is the official expansion pack to Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn, developed by BioWare and published by Interplay Entertainment, released in June 2001 for Windows and macOS as the grand finale to the Bhaalspawn saga that began in the original 1998 Baldur's Gate. Following the defeat of the main antagonist in Shadows of Amn, the expansion continues the story as the player character (a Bhaalspawn, or child of the dead god of murder) pursues their destiny to claim the Throne of Bhaal, facing rival Bhaalspawn, ancient demons, and godlike entities across new regions in Tethyr and the planes.
The expansion introduces a significantly raised experience cap of 8,000,000 (allowing characters to reach levels 31–40 depending on class), unlocking High-Level Class Abilities such as level 10 spells for mages, Quest spells for priests, and unique skills for thieves and bards, many of which can be used multiple times without resting. It adds the legendary multi-level dungeon Watcher's Keep (accessible from both Shadows of Amn and Throne of Bhaal), where players can confront the demon prince Demogorgon, as well as numerous new areas, monsters, weapons, and magical items that can be crafted from components found throughout the game. In 2013, Beamdog released the Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition, which includes both Shadows of Amn and Throne of Bhaal under a remastered Infinity Engine, adding widescreen support, improved UI, four new companions (Dorn, Neera, Rasaad returning from BG1:EE, plus new thief Hexxat and easter-egg character Wilson the bear), the Black Pits II arena mode, and 350,000 additional words of story content across both campaigns. Buyers comparing a Baldur's Gate II: Throne of Bhaal CD key should note that the expansion is no longer sold separately in most storefronts; it is now bundled exclusively within the Baldur's Gate II: Enhanced Edition, which also includes the Black Pits II and all modern platform support.
