Below the Crown is a single-player roguelike strategy game developed by Misfits Attic, the studio behind Duskers and A Virus Named TOM, and published with Shochiku. It entered Steam Early Access in November 2025 and had its full release on PC on April 21, 2026.
The idea is chess without the long openings. You start with a single piece instead of sixteen and lead a wizard into procedural dungeons for an Emperor who wants gold. As you descend, you cast new pieces onto the board, such as a Rook or an Archer, and build a small army with its own abilities.
Each floor is a tactical puzzle. Enemy movement stays simple until you reach the bosses, so the challenge comes from positioning, spells, and how you spend your gold. You can save gold for the Emperor or use it to survive, and Undo Tokens soften mistakes.
Odd psychological tests appear between floors, asking about your state of mind and your relationship with your pieces. Infinite and Random Dungeon modes add variety, and you can post victories as challenges, watch replays, and join daily challenges.
Below the Crown suits players who like chess-style tactics, short roguelike runs, and puzzle-like strategy, even if they have never studied chess. Different wizards with their own abilities, a growing piece roster, and tougher boss fights give each new run more depth.
PC: PC keys activate on Steam. The game is light on hardware and needs under 1 GB of storage.
Language: The game supports English only, so check that it suits you before you buy.
