Battles take place on a grid, with units acting in order of initiative. You move, attack, and position gladiators from physical, ranged, and magical classes to outmaneuver opponents. Deity abilities can turn a fight, and a shady deal with a local crime lord can weaken enemies before the battle starts.

Between fights, you recruit new gladiators by paying gold, dueling them, or showing mercy in the arena. You level them up, learn new abilities, treat traumas, and equip new gear. Death is permanent, so a fallen gladiator is lost for good, although their legacy carries on. Every loss forces you to rethink your roster and adapt your tactics for the next tournament.

You also manage your city by unlocking, building, and upgrading structures that add new services and mechanics. Bloodgrounds is a single-player game that suits fans of tactics RPGs, roguelites, and long-term team management.
