Carrion is a reverse horror action game developed by Phobia Game Studio and published by Devolver Digital. It launched on July 23, 2020 for PC, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox One, with PlayStation 4 following in 2021 and PlayStation 5 in 2023. Mac and Linux versions are also available on Steam.
Instead of running from a monster, you are the monster. You control a mass of red tentacles that has broken out of containment in an underground research facility. You slither through vents, pipes, and water channels, grab scientists and guards, and consume them to grow larger and stronger.
The facility is built as an interconnected map in the Metroidvania style. New abilities open fresh routes, such as turning invisible, firing spikes, or taking control of humans to open doors and use weapons. Your size also matters: a larger body is tougher in a fight, while a smaller one fits through tight spaces and unlocks different powers.
Carrion is a single-player game with no dialogue-heavy story. The plot is told through short flashbacks and the environment, and a full playthrough is fairly short compared with larger action games. Its pixel art and wet, squelching sound design give it a distinct, creepy feel.
The game suits players who enjoy horror themes, short Metroidvania adventures, and the novelty of playing the villain. Its modest PC requirements also make it a good fit for older laptops.
PC: PC keys usually activate on Steam, which includes the Windows, Mac, and Linux versions.
Consoles: PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch codes are redeemed on PlayStation Network, a Microsoft account, or the Nintendo eShop.
Extras: A Deluxe Edition content pack with bonus extras is sold separately on Steam. Check what each listing includes.
