Cave Story+ is a 2D action-adventure platformer created by Daisuke Amaya, also known as Pixel, of Studio Pixel. Nicalis developed and published this enhanced edition, which came to Steam on November 22, 2011. A Nintendo Switch version is also available, and the original freeware release dates back to 2004.
You wake up in a dark cave with no memory of who you are. Soon you find Mimiga Village, home to gentle rabbit-like creatures called Mimigas, and learn that a cruel scientist threatens them. From there you run, jump, shoot, and fly across a large island while uncovering its secrets.
Gameplay mixes precise platforming with shooting. You find ten weapons that level up as you collect energy and lose power when you take hits, so careful play keeps your arsenal strong. More than 20 boss fights and 15 areas fill the adventure, and choices along the way lead to four different endings. Hidden paths and optional areas reward players who explore every corner of the island.
The plus edition lets you switch between the original 320x240 graphics and upgraded HD art, and between the original and remastered soundtrack. It also adds six extra play modes, including Wind Fortress and Boss Rush. On Steam, the game supports local shared-screen co-op.
Cave Story+ suits players who enjoy classic 8-bit and 16-bit style action games, exploration-heavy platformers, and short but replayable indie adventures.
PC: PC keys activate on Steam and run on very modest hardware.
Nintendo Switch: Switch codes are redeemed on the Nintendo eShop with a Nintendo Account.
Single edition: Cave Story+ is the complete enhanced edition, so there is no separate DLC to buy.
Before you buy, check the activation platform and region on each offer, and read our guide on how to activate your CD key. You can find more about the publisher on the official Nicalis website.
