Khans of the Steppe is a grand strategy expansion for Crusader Kings III, developed by Paradox Development Studio and published by Paradox Interactive. Released on April 28, 2025 for PC, it is the second core expansion for the game and is playable on Windows, macOS, and Linux.
The expansion puts nomadic life at the center of play. Nomadic rulers manage a Herd instead of fixed holdings, migrate across the map to find fertile land, and build Dominance to keep their subjects obedient.
The Steppe itself changes over time. A Steppe Seasons system shifts how fertile each area is, so realms must adapt and move rather than stay put. A new Tributaries system also lets rulers take subjects that pay tribute without becoming full vassals, giving both sides more flexibility.
Mongolian culture gets detailed attention. A new bookmark starts you as the young Temüjin, the future Genghis Khan, and you can unite the Steppe as the Great Khan. The Kurultai council, a new succession type, and traditions such as Tsagaan Sar celebrations add flavor. Crusader Kings III supports single-player and online multiplayer.
Khans of the Steppe suits Crusader Kings III players who want a very different way to rule, and fans of medieval Central Asian history.
