Dark Messiah of Might and Magic is a first-person action RPG developed by Arkane Studios and published by Ubisoft. It was released on October 25, 2006 for PC and runs on an enhanced version of Valve's Source engine.
You play as Sareth, an apprentice sent on a mission that draws him into a dark prophecy. The game takes place in the Might and Magic world of Ashan and moves through 12 large levels, from ruined towns to undead crypts and orc strongholds.
Its reputation rests on combat. Melee fighting is physical and weighty, with full-body awareness and a physics system that lets you kick enemies off ledges, into spikes, or under falling objects. Over 30 weapons and a set of spells support different approaches, so you can play as a warrior, a stealthy assassin, a mage, or a mix of all three.
A skill system lets you spend points freely rather than lock into one class. The original release also included a Crusade multiplayer mode for up to 32 players with five classes, though the single-player campaign is the main reason most players buy it today. Choices made late in the story lead to different endings, which gives the campaign some replay value.
It suits fans of immersive sims and melee-heavy action, especially players who enjoyed Arkane's later Dishonored games and want to see where many of those ideas started.
PC: PC keys activate on Steam. It is a Windows-only release.
Single edition: There is one standard edition with the full campaign and the original multiplayer mode.
Older hardware: The game targets mid-2000s PCs, so almost any modern computer can run it.
