Darwin's abilities come from real octopus behavior. He swims through flooded areas, climbs walls with his suction cups, shoots ink at threats, and uses camouflage to slip past danger. Each area mixes platforming, traps, and environmental puzzles.

The story is told through cinematic scenes and uncovers UFOOD's secrets, including experiments and mind control. It is a single-player game, and the PC version is Steam Deck Verified.

Inspirations cited for the game include Limbo and Little Nightmares, though Darwin's Paradox! uses a brighter, more playful art style. The project was first announced in 2022 as the next game from former Arkane Lyon studio director Romuald Capron. Its title references Charles Darwin's paradox about coral reefs thriving in nutrient-poor waters, and Konami released a free demo ahead of launch.
