You play as Frank West, a freelance photojournalist who flies into the small town of Willamette, Colorado, to chase a story. He ends up trapped in the Willamette Parkview Mall during a zombie outbreak and has 72 hours until his helicopter returns. In that time, you uncover what caused the outbreak, rescue survivors, and decide how much of the story you want to see.

Almost anything in the mall can become a weapon, from benches and guitars to shopping carts and lawn mowers. Taking photos earns PP for leveling up, and surviving characters and boss-like psychopaths add pressure to a clock that never stops. Missing a case file changes how the story ends, so planning your route matters.

The remaster keeps the original structure but adds quality-of-life changes. Full voice acting is now included, an auto-save option helps reduce lost progress, and you can move and shoot at the same time. Survivor AI and the in-game time display have also been improved. The game is single-player only.
