Devil May Cry 4 Special Edition is a hack-and-slash action game developed and published by Capcom. It is an enhanced version of the 2008 original and was released on June 23, 2015 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
The story takes place in Fortuna, a castle town ruled by the Order of the Sword, a group that worships the demon knight Sparda. Nero, a young knight of the Order, is sent to hunt down Dante after Dante attacks the Order's leader. As demons flood the town, Nero starts to uncover what the Order is really planning.
Combat is built around long, stylish combos. Nero's Devil Bringer arm lets him grab enemies, pull himself toward them, and throw them around, while Dante switches between four fighting styles on the fly. A style meter grades every fight, so varied attacks and avoiding damage earn higher ranks and more Red Orbs for upgrades.
The Special Edition adds three new playable characters with their own campaigns: Vergil with his katana and summoned swords, Lady with her Kalina Ann rocket launcher and guns, and Trish with the sword Sparda. It also adds Legendary Dark Knight mode, which fills each area with far more enemies, and a Turbo mode that speeds up the whole game. The Bloody Palace survival challenge returns.
Devil May Cry 4 Special Edition suits players who enjoy fast, technical action, mastering combo systems, and replaying missions for better ranks. It is a single-player game.
PC: Most PC keys activate on Steam. The game runs on modest hardware and needs about 27 GB of storage.
PS4 and Xbox One: Console codes are redeemed on PlayStation Network or a Microsoft account. The Xbox One version also plays on Xbox Series X|S through backward compatibility.
Special Edition vs. original: The original 2008 release does not include Vergil, Lady, Trish, or Legendary Dark Knight mode. Make sure a listing says Special Edition.
