The expansion continues the dark fantasy story of Sanctuary after the events of Diablo II, sending players to the frozen Barbarian Highlands and Mount Arreat to confront Baal, the Lord of Destruction. Lord of Destruction dramatically expands the original game with a new fifth act, additional enemies, hundreds of new items, runes, runewords, charms, and major gameplay improvements.
Players can choose between two new playable classes — the Assassin and the Druid — while exploring deeper loot systems and enhanced multiplayer progression. The expansion also introduced larger stash space, alternate weapon swapping, mercenary equipment systems, and support for higher 800x600 resolution gameplay.
