Far Cry is a first-person shooter developed by Crytek and published by Ubisoft. It was first released for PC on March 23, 2004 and later arrived on Steam in 2008. It is the original game in the Far Cry series.
You play as Jack Carver, a former soldier working as a boat captain. After he ferries a journalist named Valerie to a remote Pacific island, his boat is destroyed and she goes missing. Jack must fight through an army of mercenaries and uncover the experiments being run on the island.
The game was known for its large outdoor levels and long draw distances, which let you approach fights from many angles. You can sneak through dense jungle, snipe from a distance, or use vehicles and boats to move between areas. Enemy soldiers work together, flank your position, and react to noise, which made the AI stand out when the game launched. Weapons range from pistols and assault rifles to sniper rifles and rocket launchers.
The Steam version is listed as single-player. Later in the campaign, the story shifts toward a science-fiction threat, with mutated creatures joining the human enemies. The campaign is linear, with a series of large levels connected by the story, rather than the open world of later entries.
Far Cry suits fans of classic PC shooters and players curious about where the series began before Far Cry 3, 4, and 5.
