Final Fantasy XVI is an action role-playing game where you control protagonist Clive Rosfield through segmented open environments across the twin continents of Valisthea. Unlike previous Final Fantasy games with turn-based combat, XVI features real-time action combat where Clive uses both physical attacks and magic-based abilities from summoned monsters called Eikons.
The game is set in a dark fantasy world divided between six nations, powered by magical Mother Crystals and Dominant humans who host each nation's Eikon. A magical drought called the Blight begins consuming the land, driving the nations into conflict. Clive witnesses his kingdom being destroyed, becomes involved in the growing war, and swears revenge against Ifrit, the Eikon of fire that killed his brother Joshua.
Core gameplay includes exploring four massive zones about 2×2 kilometers in size, fighting dozens of unique bosses with distinct mechanics, customizing Eikonic abilities, and completing side quests from your hideaway hub. The game features over 11 hours of seamless in-engine cinematic cutscenes in the main scenario alone.
Final Fantasy XVI is for players who enjoy story-driven action RPGs, dark fantasy settings, spectacular boss battles, and complete narratives. It supports single-player mode only and comes in Story Mode (simplified combat) and normal mode, with New Game+ and harder Final Fantasy Mode available after completing the game.
The game takes 35–40 hours to complete the main story, or about 70 hours with optional content. It includes Photo Mode, Orchestrion for playing music tracks, training mode for practicing against bosses, and Active Time Lore, a database with hundreds of entries about characters, locations, and terminology.
