Foundation is a medieval city-building game developed and published by Polymorph Games, an independent studio from Quebec City, Canada. It entered Early Access on PC in February 2019 and reached its full 1.0 release on January 31, 2025. The game is available on Windows PC.
Unlike many city builders, Foundation has no grid. Instead of placing every house yourself, you paint zones on the map where villagers may build homes, cut timber, or set patrols, and settlers fill those areas in their own way. Roads and districts grow along hills and rivers, so towns end up looking natural and less planned.
The free-building tool is the other standout system. Larger structures such as churches, manors, and castles are made from individual parts that you assemble, which lets you design unique monuments. Behind the scenery sits a full economy: you assign jobs, set up production chains, collect taxes, and trade with neighboring villages.
Progress follows three Estates of the Realm: Labor, Clergy, and Kingdom. You can specialize in one path or balance all three. Maps are procedurally generated, difficulty is adjustable, and optional Aspirations add goals, while a Creative mode removes constraints entirely. Foundation is a single-player game with built-in mod support.
Foundation suits players who prefer relaxed, creative city building over combat-heavy strategy. It is a strong fit for fans of organic town planning, medieval settings, and slow, satisfying growth at your own pace.
PC: Foundation keys activate on Steam. The game is Windows only and there is no console version.
Editions: The base game is sold on its own, with some DLC available separately. Check whether a listing includes the base game or only an add-on.
Before you buy, check the activation platform and region on each offer, then follow our guide on how to activate your CD key. For studio news and updates, visit the official Polymorph Games website.
