Gears of War: E-Day is a third-person cover shooter developed by The Coalition and published by Xbox Game Studios, released on October 6, 2026 for PC and Xbox Series X|S. It is a prequel set on the planet Sera 14 years before the original Gears of War, telling the story of Emergence Day, when the Locust Horde first erupted from underground.
The campaign follows Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago as humanity is pushed into a desperate fight for survival. The tone is darker and grittier than recent entries, with reimagined Locust enemies and new creatures designed to bring horror back to the series. You can play the story alone or with up to four players online.
Combat keeps the signature cover-based shooting but adds modern movement. You can now jump, vault, slide and flank, which brings more verticality to firefights. Classic weapons return in reworked form alongside new close-quarters guns.
Multiplayer has two main modes. Horde Siege is a bigger take on the classic co-op wave mode, with four classes (Assault, Marksman, Medic and Breacher), larger maps, shared objectives across squads and world bosses. Versus offers 4v4 PvP on new maps with Ranked and Social playlists, and cross-platform play is supported.
Built in Unreal Engine 5, the game targets 4K at up to 60 FPS and supports hardware ray tracing, HDR10 and ultrawide displays on PC. Standard vs Premium Edition: The Premium Edition added 5-day early access from October 1, 2026. Standard owners can buy the Premium Upgrade separately.
