Gears Tactics is a turn-based tactical strategy game developed by Splash Damage with The Coalition and published by Xbox Game Studios. It was released on April 28, 2020 for PC, followed by Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S on November 10, 2020.
The story is set 12 years before the first Gears of War, as the Locust Horde begins to rise from underground on the planet Sera. You play as Gabe Diaz, a reluctant soldier tasked with hunting down Ukkon, the Locust scientist who creates monsters. Along the way you rescue and recruit survivors to build your squad.
Battles play out in turns on gridless maps. Each soldier has a set number of action points to move, shoot, reload, or use abilities, and cover matters as much as it does in the shooter series. Executing a downed enemy gives the rest of the squad an extra action, which rewards aggressive play instead of slow, defensive turtling. Overwatch, grenades, and chainsaw kills all come from the Gears toolkit.
Between missions you customize soldiers across classes such as Support, Heavy, Sniper, Scout, and Vanguard, with skill trees and loot gathered in the field. Towering boss battles change the scale of fights and test every plan. The console launch also added Jack, the robot companion, as a playable unit, along with new content.
Gears Tactics is single-player. It suits fans of XCOM-style tactics, Gears of War lore, and players who want quicker, more aggressive turn-based combat.
PC: Most PC keys activate on Steam. Some listings are for the Microsoft Store and Xbox app, so check the activation platform first.
Xbox: Xbox codes are redeemed on a Microsoft account and work on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S.
