Golf Story is a sports role-playing game developed and published by Australian studio Sidebar Games. It launched on September 28, 2017 as a Nintendo Switch exclusive, sold digitally through the Nintendo eShop.
You play a washed-up golfer who returns to the sport after 20 years, hoping to win back his estranged wife and make it onto the pro tour. The story plays out as a top-down adventure with plenty of humor and odd characters.
Golf is the core of everything. Shots use a three-click system for aim, power and accuracy, and you build up your golfer's power and accuracy with experience and money earned along the way.
Across eight areas you take on nine-hole courses, side quests and minigames, including disc golf, mini golf, a driving range and bowls. Local play supports one or two players on a single Switch, with one controller per player.
The courses are full of personality, with hazards such as rough terrain, wind, slopes and unusual obstacles that change how each hole plays. Characters around each area offer side quests that often bend the rules of golf, from trick shots to target challenges. New clubs can be bought along the way, and the game's retro pixel art and soundtrack give it the feel of a classic handheld RPG.
It suits players who enjoy cozy RPGs, pixel art and golf games with a sense of humor rather than strict simulation.
Activation: Codes redeem on the Nintendo eShop with a Nintendo Account; there is no PC, PlayStation or Xbox version.
Sequel: Sports Story is a separate follow-up game released in 2022 and is not included.
Check the region on each offer before buying, since eShop codes are region-specific, and read how to activate your CD key if you need help. More details are on the official Golf Story Nintendo page.
