Gothic 1 Remake is a ground-up remake of the classic 2001 open-world RPG Gothic, developed by Alkimia Interactive and published by THQ Nordic. It launched on June 5, 2026, for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, rebuilding the original in a modern engine while keeping its gritty tone and freedom of play.
The story takes place in the Kingdom of Myrtana, which is under attack by orcs. To get enough magic ore for weapons, King Rhobar II sends prisoners to work in the mines of Khorinis and has his mages raise a magical barrier to stop them escaping. The spell goes wrong and traps everyone inside, mages included, and the prisoners take over the Valley of the Mines.
You arrive as a nameless prisoner thrown into this lawless colony. To survive, you must earn your place among rival factions, each with its own camp, leaders, and goals. The world is hand-crafted rather than procedurally generated, and characters react to your actions, reputation, and the choices you make.
Gothic is known for offering little hand-holding. You learn skills from trainers, earn weapons and gear the hard way, and explore at your own risk. The remake keeps that unrestricted feel while adding modern visuals, controls, and quality-of-life options such as adjustable difficulty.
