Islanders: Console Edition is a minimalist strategy game developed by Grizzly Games and published by Coatsink. It is the console version of the 2019 PC game Islanders, released on Nintendo Switch on August 12, 2021, followed by Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5 later that month.
Each run starts on a small, randomly generated island. You choose a pack of buildings, then place them one at a time. Every building earns points based on what sits nearby, so a lumberjack scores well near trees, while some buildings lose points next to the wrong neighbors.
Reaching the score target unlocks new building packs and, eventually, a fresh island with a different biome, from grassland to desert and snowy peaks. Runs end when you run out of buildings, and a typical session lasts around half an hour.
There is no combat, no money to manage, and no timer. The console version adds controller-friendly menus and placement, and the Xbox store lists 4K and 60+ fps support.
Islands come in a mix of shapes and terrain, and because each one is generated fresh, no two runs play out the same way. Planning ahead is the key skill, because space is limited and the best spots fill up quickly. Chasing a higher final score is the main reason to replay, and the simple rules make it easy to start a quick round.
Islanders suits players who want a calm puzzle-like builder that is easy to learn and quick to replay.
