John Carpenter's Toxic Commando is a first-person co-op shooter developed by Saber Interactive and published by Focus Entertainment. It released on March 12, 2026 for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with creative input from filmmaker John Carpenter.
In the near future, an experiment to tap the energy of the Earth's core goes wrong and releases the Sludge God. Its slime turns soil to scum and people into the undead, and a team of hired commandos is sent in to clean up the mess.
Missions take place on semi-open maps where thousands of infected attack in waves. Saber's Swarm Engine, also used in World War Z and Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, keeps large hordes on screen at once.
Vehicles are a big part of the game. Some carry weapons or special abilities, while others have winches to pull your ride out of trouble. You pick a character, use guns, grenades and powers, and revive or resupply teammates.
The game is built for squads of four, either with friends or with players found online, and cross-platform multiplayer is supported. Solo play is available too. It suits fans of horde shooters and B-movie action.
The tone draws on 1980s action and horror films, matching the style of John Carpenter's own movies. Teamwork matters, since downed players need reviving and ammo has to be shared, so a coordinated squad holds up far better when the hordes grow larger and adjustable difficulty is raised.
