Just Cause is an open-world action game developed by Avalanche Studios and originally published by Eidos Interactive in 2006. The PC version is now sold on Steam under Square Enix. It is the first game in the Just Cause series and introduced agent Rico Rodriguez.
You play as Rico, a regime-change specialist sent by a secret US agency to the fictional island nation of San Esperito. The government is suspected of stockpiling weapons of mass destruction, and your job is to bring it down by any means you choose.
The island covers roughly 250,000 acres of mountains, jungles, beaches, cities, and villages, and you can explore it by land, sea, and air. Over 100 vehicles are available, and the game is known for stunts such as jumping between moving vehicles, parasailing, skydiving, and base jumping.
Missions can be approached freely. You can play rival factions against each other, support rebel forces, or work with drug cartels to weaken the government, and you can break off at any time to explore. The game is single-player only.
Just Cause suits players curious about the roots of the series, fans of mid-2000s open-world action, and anyone who wants a light, low-spec sandbox shooter.
