Martha Is Dead is a first-person psychological thriller developed by LKA, the Italian studio behind The Town of Light, and published by Wired Productions. It was released on February 24, 2022 for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
The story takes place in Tuscany in 1944, as fighting between German and Allied forces moves closer. The body of a young woman, Martha, is found in the lake near her family home. Her twin sister Giulia, daughter of a German officer, sets out to learn what happened, while local legends about a ghostly Lady of the Lake blur the line between reality and superstition.
Play is focused on exploration and story rather than combat. You walk, row a boat, and ride a bicycle across a detailed recreation of the Italian countryside. A vintage camera is a key tool: you take photos with different lenses and settings, then develop them in a darkroom to uncover clues. Puppet theater sequences and tarot cards reveal more of Giulia's memories.
The game is single-player and contains disturbing scenes, including graphic violence and themes of trauma and loss, so it is meant for adult players. Italian voice acting is the default, with an English voice option and subtitles in many languages.
Martha Is Dead suits players who enjoy narrative horror, mystery stories, and slow-paced games with strong atmosphere and a historical setting.
