Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes is a stealth action game made by Kojima Productions and published by Konami. It first launched on consoles in March 2014, and the PC version arrived on Steam on December 18, 2014. Today it is sold for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
The game is the prologue to Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. Set in 1975, it follows Snake as he infiltrates Camp Omega, a prison camp on the coast of Cuba, to rescue Chico and Paz. You choose your own entry point, route, and approach.
Ground Zeroes was the first Metal Gear Solid game with open-ended level design. You can sneak through the base unseen, tag guards with binoculars, interrogate soldiers, steal vehicles, or fight your way out. Missions take place at different times of day and in different weather, which affects how easily guards spot you.
After the main mission, extra side ops reuse the same base with new objectives, and leaderboards track your scores. The game is single-player only and runs on the FOX Engine, the same technology used in The Phantom Pain.
Because the map is compact, Ground Zeroes works well as a practice ground for the systems that return in The Phantom Pain, such as the reflex slow-motion window when a guard spots you and carrying prisoners to a helicopter for extraction.
It suits stealth fans and players who want a compact taste of Metal Gear Solid V before committing to the larger game.
Activation: PC keys activate on Steam. Console versions use the PlayStation Store or Microsoft Store.
Standalone or bundle: Ground Zeroes is sold on its own and is also included with The Phantom Pain in Metal Gear Solid V: The Definitive Experience.
Length: The main mission is short; most of the playtime comes from side ops and replaying for better ranks.
Check the activation platform and region on each offer, then read our guide on how to activate your CD key. If you want both chapters together, compare Metal Gear Solid V: The Definitive Experience, or see the Ground Zeroes Steam store page.
