Visual Studio 2026 is Microsoft’s current-generation integrated development environment for building desktop, web, cloud, mobile, and game applications. Microsoft positions it as an AI-native IDE with faster startup, a redesigned interface, and deeper Copilot integration for coding, debugging, and performance work.
This release is fully compatible with projects and extensions from Visual Studio 2022, so existing solutions can be opened without a migration step. Microsoft says more than 4,000 Visual Studio 2022 extensions also work with Visual Studio 2026, which makes upgrades much easier for teams with established toolchains.
Visual Studio 2026 is available in Community, Professional, and Enterprise editions, with Professional aimed at small teams and commercial developers. For paid users, Microsoft offers a standalone Professional licence as well as subscription-style access depending on the channel and plan.
The IDE is Windows-based and designed for modern Windows development workflows, with support for the latest .NET and C++ tooling. It is a strong fit for developers who want a responsive IDE, built-in AI assistance, and a smoother upgrade path from Visual Studio 2022.
