Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor is an open-world action adventure developed by Monolith Productions and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. It was released on September 30, 2014 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, with later versions for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
The story is set between the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. You play as Talion, a Ranger of Gondor who is killed at the Black Gate and returns bound to the wraith of Celebrimbor, the Elf lord who forged the Rings of Power. Together they seek revenge on Sauron's forces in Mordor.
Combat uses a fluid, counter-based melee system, mixed with stealth, archery, and wraith powers. You can climb almost any surface, ambush patrols from above, and later dominate Orcs to turn them against their own leaders.
The standout feature is the Nemesis System. Orc captains and warchiefs have their own names, strengths, fears, and weaknesses. If an Orc kills you, he gets promoted, grows stronger, and remembers the fight next time. This creates personal rivalries that differ in every playthrough.
Shadow of Mordor is single-player. It suits fans of Tolkien's world, open-world action games, and players who enjoy emergent stories created by the game's systems. The sequel, Middle-earth: Shadow of War, continues Talion's story.
PC: PC keys activate on Steam. The game needs a 64-bit Windows system and 44 to 57 GB of storage.
Editions: The Game of the Year Edition bundles the base game with its story and gameplay DLC, including Lord of the Hunt and The Bright Lord. It is usually the better pick.
Online features: Since December 31, 2020, Vendetta missions, leaderboards, and the Nemesis Forge transfer to Shadow of War are no longer available.
