Mortal Shell is a soulslike action RPG developed by Cold Symmetry and published by Playstack. It released on August 18, 2020 for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, with an Enhanced Edition following for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S in 2021.
You explore a ruined world called Fallgrim, fighting tough enemies, finding shrines and learning how items work by using them. Death is punishing, so careful timing, stamina management and enemy knowledge matter.
Its central idea is shells. You possess the bodies of four lost warriors, each with its own stats, play style and unlockable skills, and you can switch between them. The Harden ability turns your body to stone mid-fight to block attacks, even during your own swings.
A small set of distinct weapons, a parry that restores health, and a separate roguelite mode added in The Virtuous Cycle DLC round out the experience. It is a single-player game.
Each shell plays differently. Some are durable and slow, others are quick but fragile, and their skill trees unlock new abilities as you spend resources earned from defeating enemies. If you fall in battle you are ejected from your shell and get one chance to return to it before dying. Weapons are few but distinct, and each can be upgraded with special attacks. Boss battles, hidden areas and a deliberately cryptic world encourage exploration and experimentation from players willing to learn its systems.
It suits players who enjoy demanding melee combat and compact, atmospheric games that can be finished in a shorter time than larger soulslikes.
Activation: PC keys activate on Steam; console versions redeem on PlayStation Network or a Microsoft account.
Enhanced Edition: PS5 and Xbox Series X|S use the Enhanced Edition, with higher resolution and frame rate.
