The headline feature is the Exhaust Engine, which builds pressure as attacking teams keep the puck in the offensive zone and wears down defenders over time. Goalies also tire under sustained pressure, which can open scoring chances late in long shifts.

Total Control skill moves let you pull off complex dekes with a single button, and a reworked passing system maps passes to the face buttons. Physics-based contact changes body checking, letting you charge hits for more impact, and checks into the benches and glass return.

Modes include Franchise, Be a Pro, Hockey Ultimate Team (HUT), and World of Chel. NHL 24 added full crossplay for HUT and World of Chel, so players on PlayStation and Xbox can play together. Local play on one console is also supported.

NHL 24 was the last entry in the series released on PS4 and Xbox One, which makes it the most recent option for last-generation hockey fans. Be a Pro lets you create a single player and guide their career, while Franchise mode covers trades, contracts, and scouting across multiple seasons.

Which version should you buy?

• PlayStation: Codes redeem on PlayStation Network. Online play on PS4 and PS5 needs a PlayStation Plus membership.

• Xbox: Codes redeem on a Microsoft account. Online multiplayer requires Xbox Game Pass Core or Ultimate.
