Outlast 2 is a first-person survival horror game developed and published by Red Barrels, the Montreal studio behind the original Outlast. It was released in April 2017 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, and arrived on Nintendo Switch in 2018.
You play as Blake Langermann, a camera operator working with his wife Lynn, a journalist investigating a murder in the Arizona desert. After their helicopter crashes, Lynn disappears, and Blake is left alone in the territory of Temple Gate, a settlement run by Sullivan Knoth and his doomsday followers.
Blake cannot fight back. Survival depends on hiding in barrels, under beds, and in tall crops, or running when you are spotted. Your camcorder is the core tool: its night vision lets you see in the dark, a microphone helps you hear enemies nearby, and battery levels must be managed with spare batteries you find. You also need bandages to treat injuries.
The story jumps between the desert village and unsettling memories of a Catholic school from Blake's past. Outlast 2 deals with mature themes and graphic violence, and it is intended for adult players only.
It is a single-player experience focused on tension, chase sequences, and atmosphere rather than combat. The game suits horror fans who want a story-heavy experience with constant pressure, and newcomers can start here since it tells a new story in the same universe.
