Phantom Breaker: Battle Grounds Ultimate is a 2D side-scrolling beat 'em up developed by Rocket Panda Games Japan and published by Rocket Panda Games. It launched on April 17, 2025 for PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch, reviving a series that began on Xbox 360.
Combat borrows from fighting games, with combos, special attacks and strategic encounters rather than simple button mashing. Defeating enemies earns experience and points that unlock new skills, so each character grows stronger as you push through eight stages.
This version was rebuilt from scratch in Unreal Engine 5 while keeping the nostalgic pixel-art look. The result is smoother movement, flashier specials and an improved online experience. A total of 38 characters are playable, including villains and minor enemies unlocked after finishing Story Mode.
Local play supports up to four players in co-op or versus. Online, up to six players can team up in co-op and up to eight can battle in versus, with cross-platform play across supported systems.
The story follows Mikoto, Waka, Itsuki and Yuzuha as they cross parallel worlds to rescue Nagi from the villain Phantom. A remastered soundtrack by J-rock band The Phantom Breakers can be swapped for the classic tracks. It suits fans of arcade brawlers, anime-style action and couch co-op.
PC key: The PC version is sold on Steam and the Epic Games Store; check which launcher each key activates on.
Console keys: PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo eShop codes only work on their own platform.
DLC: Extra character DLC, such as the Kaho pack, is sold separately and requires the base game.
