Pokémon Legends: Z-A is an action role-playing game developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo and The Pokémon Company. It was released on October 16, 2025 for Nintendo Switch, with a separate Nintendo Switch 2 Edition launched the same day.

The whole adventure takes place in Lumiose City, the main city of the Kalos region first seen in Pokémon X and Y. The city is in the middle of a redevelopment plan meant to make it a place where people and Pokémon live together, and you arrive just as strange events begin to unfold.

Battles play out in real time. You move freely around the field while your Pokémon fights, choosing moves that recharge after use instead of waiting for turns. Wild Pokémon live in Wild Zones scattered across the city, where you can sneak up on them and catch them. Mega Evolution returns as a central feature, with new Mega forms added.

At night, parts of the city turn into battle areas for the Z-A Royale, a ranked tournament where you climb from rank Z toward rank A by defeating other trainers. Local and online battles for two to four players are supported, and online play requires a Nintendo Switch Online membership.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A suits series fans who want faster, action-focused battles and newer players who enjoy exploring a detailed city at their own pace.

Which version should you buy?

• Switch vs. Switch 2 Edition: The Switch version also runs on Switch 2. The Switch 2 Edition adds higher resolution and smoother frame rates, and an upgrade pack is sold for Switch owners.

• Activation: Digital codes are redeemed on the Nintendo eShop. Match the code region to your Nintendo Account region.

• DLC: The Mega Dimension expansion, released December 10, 2025, is sold separately and requires the base game.
