Resident Evil 7: Biohazard is the 11th game in the main Resident Evil series and the 27th game in the entire franchise. It is the first canon Resident Evil game to switch from third-person to a fully first-person perspective. The game features Ethan Winters as a completely new protagonist who arrives at a farmhouse in rural Louisiana to find his missing wife, Mia.
The game starts with Ethan in a helpless situation where the main foes cannot be killed easily, and when killed, they don't stay dead for long. Players must run for their lives or hide to save bullets for when they really need them. While the game progressively introduces more weapons and increases action as the story progresses, it maintains strong horror elements with minimized shooting action.
Capcom achieved higher visual fidelity using the proprietary RE Engine with VR-oriented tools. The photorealistic graphical style lets players experience every abhorrent detail up close. Playing in PlayStation VR Mode escalates the unsettling feeling of presence to a level horror fans have never experienced.
Puzzle-solving is a core component. Players navigate and solve puzzles to advance the plot and open areas of the residence. Puzzles range from rotating items to casting shadows, matching symbols to solving riddles.
The game is single-player only and features one continuous playthrough with no chapter or episode breaks. There are three difficulty settings: Easy, Normal, and Madhouse. Madhouse uses different enemy and item layouts, makes enemies stronger and more aggressive, and adds Cassette Tapes required for saving.
