River City Saga: Journey to the West is a roguelike action game developed by Arc System Works and UnitePlus and published by Arc System Works. It was released on June 3, 2026 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch.
The game retells the Chinese classic Journey to the West with a River City twist: Sun Wukong, Zhu Bajie, Sha Wujing, and Tang Sanzang are all played by Kunio. The crew sets out for Tianzhu in a lighthearted comedy adventure full of banter.
Each run sends you through stages packed with enemies. Gods appear at random and grant Secret Skills that boost abilities and stats, with around 80 different skills to discover. Over repeated runs you grow stronger and experiment with builds that can clear whole swarms at once.
You start with the speed-focused Sun Wukong and unlock the power-focused Zhu Bajie and the long-range Sha Wujing as the story moves forward, then switch freely between them. Familiar River City faces appear as allies or bosses dressed as characters from the legend. It is described as the first River City roguelike built for solo play.
It suits fans of Kunio-kun and River City games, beat 'em up players, and anyone who enjoys short, replayable roguelike runs. The game supports full controller play, and a gamepad is recommended on PC for the best feel.
PC: PC keys activate on Steam. The game requires 64-bit Windows 11.
Consoles: PS5 codes are redeemed on PlayStation Network; Switch codes on the Nintendo eShop.
Standalone: It is a separate game from River City Saga: Three Kingdoms and does not require it.
