Shantae Advance: Risky Revolution is a 2D side-scrolling action-adventure platformer developed and published by WayForward. Originally developed for the Game Boy Advance two decades ago and then shelved, it was completed in 2025, with a GBA cartridge release followed by PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch versions on August 19, 2025.
The story is set in Sequin Land between the original Shantae and Shantae: Risky's Revenge. Pirate queen Risky Boots plans to use the Tremor Engine to rotate the continent so she can move any town to the coast for easy plundering, and her first test turns Scuttle Town into a desert.
Shantae fights with her famous hair whip, magic items and belly-dance transformations. Six creature forms are available, including the returning monkey, elephant, spider and harpy plus new mermaid and crab forms. Each one opens new routes through the world.
The standout system is the multilayered level design. Many areas have a Front Yard and Back Yard playfield, and Tremor Engine switches let you spin and shift terrain to create paths and solve puzzles. You explore towns, crypts and labyrinths, buy upgrades and meet friends like Rottytops, Sky and Bolo.
For the first time in the series there is a Battle Mode for up to four local players. The console and PC versions also add a Modern mode with higher-resolution portraits and interface.
It suits longtime Shantae fans, collectors of retro-style platformers and anyone who enjoys Metroidvania-like exploration with bright pixel art.
Activation: PC keys activate on Steam. Console codes redeem on PlayStation Network, a Microsoft account or the Nintendo eShop.
Deluxe Edition: The Deluxe Edition adds three costumes that each boost one of Shantae's spells; the costumes are also sold as DLC.
Battle Mode: Local four-player Battle Mode requires one controller per player.
