Sherlock Holmes: Crimes and Punishments is a detective adventure game developed and published by Frogwares. It was released on September 29, 2014 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One, with earlier-generation console versions too, and later arrived on Nintendo Switch on February 3, 2022.
You play as Sherlock Holmes, with Dr. Watson at your side, across six separate cases. They include murders, missing persons, and daring thefts, and some lead into strange, almost fantastic territory. Each case is self-contained, so you can approach them one at a time.
Investigation is hands-on. You search crime scenes for clues, study objects, run small experiments, and question suspects. Holmes can use 14 detective skills, such as reading a person's appearance to build a character portrait or picturing how events unfolded.
The standout system is the deduction board. You link clues into conclusions, and different combinations can point to different culprits. You then choose whether to condemn or absolve, and a moral choice decides their fate. You can be wrong, and the game lets you continue anyway.
The game is single-player. It suits mystery fans and adventure players who want to reason through cases themselves rather than follow a single scripted answer. Because cases can end with different verdicts, it also rewards players who like to compare outcomes.
PC (Steam): Most PC keys activate on Steam. An internet connection is required for activation.
Consoles: PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch codes are redeemed on PlayStation Network, a Microsoft account, or the Nintendo eShop.
Next in the series: The follow-up, Sherlock Holmes: The Devil's Daughter, is listed separately.
