Shotgun King: The Final Checkmate is a turn-based strategy roguelike developed and published by independent studio PUNKCAKE Délicieux. It launched on PC on May 12, 2022 and later came to PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch in 2023.
The premise twists classic chess. Your whole army has defected, leaving only your black king and a royal shotgun. On each turn you either move one square like a normal king or fire a spread of shot at the white pieces, then move again to reload.
To clear a floor, you must kill the enemy king while avoiding checkmate. After each floor, you pick one of two card pairs: each gives you an upgrade but also strengthens the white side, so every choice is a trade-off. Enemy pieces move by normal chess rules, so you need to read their threats a turn ahead and position your king before you shoot.
Shotgun King is a single-player game. Runs last about 20 minutes, with 20 difficulty ranks, over 100 achievements, an endless mode, an arcade-style chase mode, and a raiding mode. The PC version also supports mods through the Steam Workshop.
It suits chess fans looking for a fresh twist, roguelike players who like short runs, and anyone who wants a strategy game that runs on almost any computer, including the Steam Deck.
PC: PC keys usually activate on Steam, which covers Windows, macOS, and Linux.
Consoles: PlayStation codes are redeemed on PlayStation Network, Xbox codes on a Microsoft account, and Switch codes on the Nintendo eShop.
Editions: There is one standard edition. The soundtrack is sold separately.
