The game is a sequel to Sonic Wings, the arcade shooter series known in North America as Aero Fighters. The last entry before this one came out in 1998. In the year 20XX, the mysterious organization Fata Morgana returns with superweapons and seizes control of the world's military arsenal. The story stays light, and the focus is on fast arcade action.

You choose from eight pilots of the rescue team Project Blue, with hidden characters unlocked under certain conditions. You then fly through eight stages, including bonus stages, set in modern cities and locations, facing the giant futuristic weapons the series is known for.

Local co-op lets two players fly together, and the story dialogue changes depending on which two pilots are paired. Those pairing scenarios can also be viewed in single-player.
