Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, often called KOTOR, is a story-driven role-playing game developed by BioWare and published by LucasArts. It first launched in 2003, and today it is sold on PC through Steam and on Nintendo Switch through a port by Aspyr released in 2021.
The story takes place about 4,000 years before the rise of the Galactic Empire. The Republic is losing a war against the Sith led by Darth Malak, and your character wakes up aboard a ship under attack. From there you build a party, gain Force powers and travel between planets such as Taris, Dantooine, Tatooine, Kashyyyk and Korriban.
Combat runs in real time but can be paused at any moment to queue actions for each party member, using rules based on the d20 tabletop system. Dialogue choices shift your alignment toward the light or dark side, which changes how companions react, which powers suit you and how the story ends. Side activities include the pazaak card game and swoop bike racing.
KOTOR is a single-player game. It suits RPG fans who enjoy branching conversations, memorable companions such as HK-47 and Bastila, and one of the best-known plot twists in Star Wars games. Its official system requirements are also very low by current standards.
PC (Steam): The PC key activates on Steam and includes English, French, German, Italian and Spanish.
Nintendo Switch: The Aspyr port is redeemed on the Nintendo eShop with a Nintendo Account.
Sequel: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords is a separate game sold on its own.
Before you buy, check the activation platform and region listed on each offer, and read how to activate your CD key if you need help. For screenshots and store details, see the official Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Steam page.
