Starcom: Unknown Space is an action-adventure RPG of space exploration, ship building and tactical combat, developed and published by independent studio Wx3 Labs. The full version was released on PC via Steam on September 2, 2024.

You begin with a small scout ship in an open universe of more than a hundred star systems. Undiscovered planets, lost derelicts, artifacts and strange phenomena are scattered across the map, and over 230 anomalies each come with their own illustration and short story.

The ship builder is the heart of progression. You add modules to turn your scout into a deep space explorer, a fast strike craft or a heavily armored battlecruiser, and you can share blueprints with other players. Scientific discoveries earn Research Points that unlock weapons, shields, armor and crew upgrades in a large tech tree.

Combat is real-time and top-down, built around positioning, timing and the loadout you designed. Alien factions react to your choices, so you decide whom to trust, trade with, hire or fight. More than 60 main and side missions, a searchable ship log and save-anywhere support outside combat round out the campaign.

It is a single-player game with adjustable difficulty. Fans of the earlier Starcom: Nexus will recognize the mechanics, but this is a new story that needs no prior knowledge.

It suits players who enjoy classic Star Control-style exploration, ship design and a self-paced sci-fi campaign.
