Stardew Valley is an open-ended country-life RPG created by American developer Eric Barone (also known as ConcernedApe). The game was released on PC on February 26, 2016, and has been inspired by the classic Harvest Moon series.
In Stardew Valley, you start by inheriting your late grandfather's neglected farm plot in the fictional rural community of Pelican Town, located in Stardew Valley. Armed with hand-me-down tools and a few coins, you set out to begin your new life. Can you learn to live off the land and turn these overgrown fields into a thriving home?
The game features a top-down perspective with a retro pixel-art aesthetic reminiscent of 16-bit games from the 1990s. The game world progresses through an internal clock system with days, seasons, and years affecting farming cycles and social events.
Core activities include:
Farming (tilling soil, planting, watering, harvesting crops)
Animal husbandry (feeding and caring for chickens, cows, and other livestock)
Mining underground caverns with monsters and valuable resources
Fishing in varied waterways
Foraging for wild plants
Building relationships with over 30 unique townspeople
Energy management is crucial since performing actions consumes energy, which can be replenished by eating food or sleeping. Progression happens as players build skills through repeated actions in farming, mining, fishing, foraging, and combat.
The overarching theme is renewal: you restore the farm, build relationships with townspeople, and choose whether to support the town's crumbling traditional community center or join forces with Joja Corporation, a large retail chain.
Stardew Valley features an open-ended story with no definitive ending. Players may pursue diverse goals such as agricultural success, mine exploration, marriage, or community development. The game also includes a multiplayer mode where up to eight players can collaborate on farming, resource sharing, and town relationships.
