SteamWorld Dig is a 2D action-adventure platformer developed and published by Swedish studio Image & Form. It first appeared on Nintendo 3DS in 2013, reached PC on December 5, 2013, and later came to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
You play as Rusty, a steam-powered robot who arrives in the mining town of Tumbleton. Beneath the town lies a deep network of caves, and each trip underground means digging new paths, collecting ore, and climbing back up before your light runs out.
Ore you bring back is sold for money, which buys better pickaxes, drills, and upgrades. New abilities open routes that were blocked before, giving the game a Metroidvania structure that rewards exploring and planning your tunnels.
The adventure is single-player and fairly short, usually a few hours long, with enemies, hidden caves, and simple puzzles along the way. The underground layout is partly randomized, so each run feels a little different.
As you return with more valuable ore, Tumbleton slowly grows and new upgrades become available in town. The game pairs a Wild West setting with steam-powered robots and a hand-drawn art style. Deeper layers bring tougher enemies, harder rock, and new hazards, so upgrades and careful tunnel planning go hand in hand.
It suits players who like relaxed exploration with a steady upgrade loop, and it is the starting point of the SteamWorld series.
Activation: PC keys activate on Steam and work on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Console versions use the PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, or Nintendo eShop.
