Stronghold Crusader 2 is a real-time strategy and castle-building game developed and published by Firefly Studios. It released on September 22, 2014 for Windows PC as the sequel to Stronghold: Crusader from 2002.
Each match blends a city builder with RTS combat. You place farms, workshops, and walls, keep your people fed and happy, and control vital desert oases that feed your economy. That economy then pays for the army that defends your keep or tears down a rival castle.
The game moved the series to a new 3D engine with Havok physics, so walls, towers, and gatehouses crumble piece by piece under siege fire. More than 25 unit types are available, each with a special ability, such as the Assassin who scales enemy walls or Archers who fire arrow volleys. Random events like tornadoes and locust swarms can upset your plans.
Two historic single-player campaigns follow Richard the Lionheart and the Sultan of Syria. Skirmish mode supports up to 8 human and AI lords with a maximum of 4 human players, and you can play online against others or team up in co-op. A built-in map editor and Steam Workshop support add more maps.
Stronghold Crusader 2 suits players who enjoy classic RTS games with a strong economy layer, castle design, and long sieges rather than fast unit spam. Fans who played the original Crusader will feel at home, and the low system needs make it easy to run on older PCs.
PC only: The game is released only for Windows PC. Keys activate on Steam, and there is no macOS, Linux, or console version.
Editions and DLC: Extra mini-campaigns and AI lord packs are sold as separate DLC. Check whether a listing is the base game or a bundle that includes add-ons.
Older classic: If you want the 2002 original instead, look for the remastered Stronghold Crusader Definitive Edition.
