Supreme Commander is a real-time strategy game developed by Gas Powered Games and led by designer Chris Taylor. It was first released on February 20, 2007 for Windows PC, and the current Steam edition is published by Square Enix.
The story follows the Infinite War, a thousand-year conflict between three factions: the United Earth Federation, the Aeon Illuminate, and the Cybran Nation. Each faction has its own campaign, units, and view of what the future of humanity should be.
Battles happen on a huge scale. You start with a single Armored Command Unit, build factories and resource extractors, and grow an army that fights on land, at sea, and in the air at once. Experimental units such as giant walkers and flying fortresses can turn a match late in the game.
The strategic zoom lets you pull the camera from a close view of one tank out to a full map overview, where units appear as icons. This makes it easier to manage several fronts and queue orders across a whole battlefield.
Beyond the campaigns, there is skirmish mode against AI and online multiplayer. Supreme Commander suits strategy players who prefer economy management and large battles over fast micro-heavy matches, and who enjoy planning a long war across a whole map.
PC: PC keys activate on Steam. The game runs on older Windows systems and needs about 8 GB of storage.
Base game: This page covers the original Supreme Commander. The standalone expansion Forged Alliance and the sequel Supreme Commander 2 are sold separately.
